Bigboss Leaves Host

This weekend, one of the larger iPhone Cydia/Installer repositories made a break from its hosting site. The Big Boss repository is no longer associated with iphone.sleepers.net. As of this morning, the page that announced this development (http://sleepers.net/news/2008/10/19/bigboss-has-left-the-building/) has apparently been taken down.

In the jailbreak world of the iPhone, hosting services (called “repositories”) offer free software packaging and distribution to developers. The developers are spared the enormous bandwidth demands and the fussy details involved in preparing the packages for distribution. In exchange, the repositories receive both page views and ad revenue.

Big Boss is one of the major players in this arena, along with Smxy and ModMyi (né ModMyiPhone). The Big Boss repository spread across 13 servers handle 20 terabytes eacmonth in ongoing iPhone-related traffic.

“Unfortunately, the arrangement I had with sleepers didn’t turn out the way I expected, so for the sake of the community and my future involvement I felt it best to move,” Big Boss wrote. “Last night, I completed the move of the news site to my new servers. The repository move was invisible to the community since the domains in use did not change. However, folks wishing to find my news site will need to use my new repository URL: http://thebigboss.org. No update is required within the installer/Cydia since the URL did not change there.”
