Apple 4th gen coming…. Not really..

It was a long, long wait for an iPhone with 3G data capabilities, but now that it’s here, people are starting to look toward what’s next. The Long Term Evolution Standard, also known as 4G, is the next generation in cellular data after 3G, but AT&T is says not to hold your breath waiting for it to get to the U.S.

AT&T Architecture VP Hank Kafka announced at the 4G Executive Summit that the company will not be making a fast transition to the new technology. The news isn’t surprising since the technology is extremely new, but it is a little disappointing. LTE’s speeds have clocked much faster than that of 3G during testing, reaching as high as 170Mbps.

AT&T says they do eventually plan to start adding 4G in the U.S., but not for 2 to 3 years. Knowing Apple, they’ve probably already looked in to the idea of an iPhone 4G, but it will be a long wait.
